You can always count on seeing some ratchetness at the MTV Video Music Awards, and this year’s awards were no different. From Taylor Swift’s daring romper, Ariana Grande’s ’80s-inspired Moschino, to Katy Perry and Riff Raff’s Versace remix on Britney and Justin T’s 2001 VMA denim on denim look, there were A LOT going on on the red carpet. Let’s see what they wore in our VMA Red Carpet Rundown!
What We Expected from Beyonce: Beyonce in Nicholas Jebran Couture
No doubt about it, Beyonce was the Queen of the VMAs. She looked effortless during her 15-minute performance in receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Yet, she played it VERY safe on the red carpet. The Nicholas Jebran Couture sequined spider web like gown, was a little less fashiony that what we have been accustomed to seeing from Queen Bee. Alas, she was the Queen of the night, so we must abide by the Queens rules.
The Most ‘Yonce Like Award: Laverne Cox in Marc Bouwer
Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox did a ‘Yonce and showed up to the red carpet in a black Marc Bouwer sequin, one-shoulder mini dress. Literally, if you crossed your eyes you would have thought Cox was Beyonce.
Bae of the Evening: Nick Jonas
Clearly, Nick Jonas was the best-dressed male of the night and reached peak bae-ness while doing it.
The Wannabe J. Lo Award: Iggy Azeala in Versace
This is such a J. Lo moment that it’s not even funny. From the sparkle to the slicked back hair, you can’t say that it’s not J. Lo. Pay homage, Iggy.
Most Improved: Nicki Minaj in Saint Laurent Paris
With slicked hair and minimal makeup, Nicki Minaj looked STUNNING in a short sophisticated Saint Laurent leopard print mini dress. This is easily one of the best looks of Nicki Minaj’s career.
Best Boobies: Rita Ora in Donna Karan Atelier
We can’t stop looking at Rita Ora’s assets. We can’t stop…
Most Unexpected: (tie) Ariana Grande in Moschino & Miley Cyrus in Alexandre Vauthier
Since she normally looks like a porcelain doll, Ariana Grande went for an uncharacteristically edgy look wearing a Moschino mini dress and over the knee Tom Ford boots. On the flip side, we saw a less edgy look from Miley Cyrus in Alexandre Vauthier.
The ‘I am Actually J Lo’ Award: J Lo in Charbel Zoe
Unlike her imitator coughs Iggy, coughs, J. Lo does what she does best on the red carpet. Wear a revealing number that shows she’s the original Benjamin Button. She looks HAUTE!
The ‘You Tried It’ Award: Katy Perry and Riff Raff in Versace
Katy Perry brought rapper Riff Raff to this year’s awards and gave a comic nod to Britney and Justin’s denim on denim look from the 2001 VMAS. We get it, Katy you’re funny. How hard do you want us to laugh now?
The ‘I Still Got It’ Award: Gwen Stefani in L.A.M.B. Couture
We’ll give Gwen Stefani a pass. She looks fun and effervescent here, yet a bit dated. Again, this is the first time in a LONG time we’ve seen Gwen out and about, so we’ll let this slide.
Thot of the Night: Amber Rose in Laura Dewitt
We had flashbacks to Rose McGowan’s 1998 chain-link dress when Amber Rose hit the red carpet in this slinky Laura Dewitt number. It’s such a thot dress, that it may actually exceed the original McGowan thot dress.
Most Annoying: Victoria Justice
Typically, this wouldn’t be annoying; actually the outfit is not that bad…from the torso up. However, the ruffled skirt and “#hashtag” Edie Parker clutch, makes Victoria look 2000 and late. Thank GAWD, she didn’t have a clutch that read “#Selfie”.
The WTF Award: Taylor Swift in Mary Katrantzou
All we can say is; what the hell was Taylor smoking to think this was ok? Pixie dust?
Best Dressed of the Night: Kim Kardashian – West in Balmain
Although we may get some slack for this, our best dressed go to Kim Kardashian – West in a heavily beaded Balmain mini dress with cape. The look is a HUGE risk for Kim and she knocks it out the park. It’s sexy and both fashion editorial. Kudos to Kim for pulling off something that a lot of celebs probably couldn’t!
